THIS WEEK'S VISION: Finding Meaning In Unlikely Spaces

There was a time when I believed that mediumship belonged in sacred, quiet, and formal settings—places where people approached spirit with reverence and deep intent. Churches, development circles, and private readings felt like the natural homes for genuine connection with the spirit world.  It has, however, been drilled into me through my training that, “mediumship can be entertaining but should never be entertainment.”

I’ve had to think long and hard about that.  The dictionary says, “entertainment is an action that provides enjoyment and is something that pleases or interests, especially a performance or show”.

A Spiritualist Church or Centre creates a sacred, reverent atmosphere where mediumship is framed as a form of service rather than entertainment. But outside of those settings—whether on a theatre stage, in a TV studio, or even on social media—mediumship can take on the structure of a staged event, making it feel more like a performance.

For me, this raises deeper questions:

  • Does calling it a “show” diminish its credibility, or is it simply an accurate description?
  • Does the intention of the medium define whether it is entertainment or something deeper?
  • Can mediumship maintain integrity in commercial or public settings without becoming just a performance?

What do you think about psychic nights in pubs? Can a setting filled with the clinking of glasses, chatter, and laughter really provide a space for something as profound as a message from a loved one in spirit? Will those messages be taken seriously? Does the spirit world even show up in such “irreverent” places?

Of course they do! The spirit world meets us where we are. Whether it’s in a church, a home, a theatre, or the back room of a busy pub, the connection is just as powerful. Mediumship doesn’t need a special setting—because love, healing, and communication from the other side can happen anywhere.

The reality is that people aren’t flocking to churches and spiritualist centres the way they used to. But they are engaging with mediumship in pubs, theatres, online, and on mainstream platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and TV. That shift means mediumship is increasingly blending with popular entertainment, whether we like it or not.

So, the real question becomes: How do we maintain the integrity of mediumship in these modern, more commercial spaces?

A performance involves a rehearsed or structured presentation intended to engage an audience. It often includes elements of showmanship, planned delivery, and sometimes dramatization.

In the context of mediumship, the concern is when evidential spirit communication starts resembling a staged act rather than an authentic, spontaneous interaction with the spirit world. While a medium needs confidence and good communication skills (which might look polished like a performance), the intention is key - mediumship should not be performed to impress but rather delivered to provide healing and truth.

Because while a demonstration in a church might feel sacred, a show in a pub or on Netflix inevitably carries different expectations. Audiences in those settings might be coming for entertainment first, spiritual insight second. And with TV editing, dramatic music, and carefully curated moments, the line between authentic mediumship and entertainment gets even blurrier.

So, if you’ve ever doubted whether something meaningful can take place in an unexpected setting, I encourage you to remain open. Spirit has a way of finding us in the places we least expect—and often, that’s exactly where our humanity needs it most.

What really happens at psychic nights in pubs? Are they just entertainment, or do they offer something deeper? Groundbreaking research reveals how these events help people process grief, connect with something beyond, and even resonate with sceptics.

For the first time ever, researchers Dr Caroline Starkey and Dr Josh Bullock have studied psychic nights in pubs and clubs across England, gathering real experiences, interviews, and data. What they found might surprise you!

Whether you're a believer, a sceptic, or just curious, this conversation will challenge what you think about mediumship, grief, and the search for meaning.

TIP OF THE MONTH

DEEPENING YOUR BLEND WITH SPIRIT: To truly blend with the spirit world, imagine stepping into their vibration rather than pulling them into yours. Begin by quieting your mind, softening your focus, and surrendering to their presence. Instead of 'reaching out,' allow their energy to merge with yours like two colours blending on a canvas. The more you trust and let go, the stronger the connection becomes.

With all good wishes,

Ann Théato
