THE JOY OF SCRYING
by Ann Théato

Scrying means to reveal or perceive that which is not known to the conscious mind. How do we do it? We do it by using our intuitive knowing, gut feeling or our clairvoyant vision. Clairvoyance means clear seeing and scrying is a clairvoyant method of seeing images, significant messages or visions and relaying information about that which we see.

Going back in time, legend and history, scrying using water was popularised by Nostradamus – he was a French seer, astrologer, and physician, and he used a bowl of water to see images of future events. Mirrors of highly polished metal were consulted in ancient China and in 3000 BC in China, eggs would have been cracked and their contents spread around and interpreted.  In Egypt, young boys were chosen to gaze into vases filled with oil.  Merlin, King Arthur’s magician, used his magical mirror to warn the king about plots and potential invasions. In ancient Greece, the Oracles of Delphi gazed into special springs to gain predictions. Vulcan, the Roman god of Fire, created a mirror that showed past, present, and future. The Greeks used bronze mirrors to see into the future and in Ancient Rome, practitioners of scrying were called specularii.

‘Scry’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘descry’, which means to see and since time immemorial, our ancestors from every culture across the globe, have used the ancient art of scrying to help them gain personal guidance, prophecy or inspiration via imagery, symbols and messages. But time is not linear and since the energy of all things can be felt, perceived and read – we can tell not only the future, but the past and the present as well.

Whatever psychic tool you use, whether it is a mirror, crystal ball, seer stone or bowl of water, you will be working with your intuition.  In the same way that you work when you are working with your psychic awareness, you may work with your gut feelings, visions that touch the inner eye or sounds you may hear subjectively in your head.  It’s different for everybody, some of us may see shapes, some may see colours, symbols or faces. The visions that you see, might be static like photographs, they might be moving, like a film and interpretation of these symbols and images is like learning a new language – the more you practice the better you become.
